SCIENCE IN AFRICA

OUR FOCUS

SFA Foundation is an African
scientific organisation working to support, strengthen
and promote science and innovation in Africa for the
benefit of all Africans.

SFA Foundation is a pan-African, not-for-profit, public charitable organisation
committed to supportung African scientists in addressing the continent's most
pressing developmental needs. Our vision is to "strenthen African science
for a better future in a global world". Our mission is "to promote science,
innovation, evidence and policy for improved health and economic
prosperity in Africa".

FOCUS AREAS

programme design & oversight

We take a holistic approach to science. Our programmatic initiatives are crafted to cater to the entire science ecosystem and span across the value chain from discovery sciences to translation sciences and targeted cross-cutting gaps

01

Early discovery sciences – Our programmes cover work in basic, fundamental science as a basis for transformational applied sciences that will revolutionize social economic development in Africa

02

Translational sciences - Our programmes encompass research, innovation, data/evidence approaches and policies that aim to convert discovery research findings into results that directly benefit humans, locally and globally.

03

Science ecosystem gaps - Our programmes are crafted to fill critical gaps in African science, with an aim to achieve state-of-the-art conducive environments for scientists, and their quality research projects, to flourish.

FUNDING

SFA Foundation funding approach is geared towards
generating quality science by supporting the best
people and ensuring they have access to conducive
research and development environments

Our funding approach is driven by commitment to benefit all Africans.SFA
Foundation leverages our deep understanding of local problems based on
the contexts and priorities of African communities and combines this with
strong, long-term, networks built with global science funders and partners.

SFA Foundation makes grants for implementation of distinct work packages
that address priority research areas in Africa. Grants are provided in two
models.1)grants to indicidual scientists or 2)grants to a consortium of
scientists.

Our Consortia Approach: Hub and spoke model

SFA Foundation adopts a consortia network model to fund our grantees due
to multiple benefits of this approach as outlined below.

The consortia model takes a hub-and-spoke approach and involves three
key types of actors

01.

Lead Institution

An institution that proposes to address
well defined research questions using
SFA Foundation grants: SFA Foundation
grantee, Hosts the PI(lead applicant),
Reports to SFA Foundation.

02.

Partner Institution

An institution that proposes to address
well defined research questions using
SFA Foundation grants: SFA Foundation
grantee, Hosts the PI(lead applicant),
Reports to SFA Foundation.

03.

Collaborator

An institution that proposes to address
well defined research questions using
SFA Foundation grants: SFA Foundation
grantee, Hosts the PI(lead applicant),
Reports to SFA Foundation.

SFA Foundation makes grants for implementation of
distinct work packages that addresses priority
research areas in Africa. Grants are provided for focus
areas aligned to our mandate, usingvarious funding
models(individual grants or grants for consortia).

AGENDA SETTING

SFA Foundation understands that sustainable positive
change will require scientists and policy makers to
work jointly to identify problems and solutions that
harness the potential of science, technology and
innovation for Africa

SFA Foundation works at the fore-front of Africa's research-policy-practice
nexus with an aim to shape the policy dialogue for science technology and
innovation to drive tangible impact for African economies and societies
